Since the end of the 20th century, tourism acquire more and more interest from institutional actors around the world. At the same time, following the global trend in research gradually driven by the “project culture”, the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) was created in 2005 to promote French research and stimulate innovation. A disciplinary field such as tourism, with a strong socio-economic and political scope in France, had not been the subject of a particular analysis in this context. By questioning the database of the projects financed by the agency, tourism appears in infinitesimal proportion. The absence of tourism, in the discourse of an agency which wishes to carry innovation and to renew the process of inquiry, giving it a preponderant voice in France, in particular for the university environment, may prove to be a concern. The analysis of the funded projects shows a distorted vision of tourism (in particular through the contextual perspective), while this funded research presents an originality compared to other themes (in terms of gender, of announced objectives of applied research). Finally, through this article and beyond the case of the ANR, it is France’s contradictory tourist ambition that is revealed.
