Gendering Social Citizenship: the Impact of Activation from a Comparative Perspective

Résumé

This chapter explores how activation and labour market reforms challenge social citizenship in Europe from a gender perspective. It compares the case sudies presented in the other chapters of the book but with a specific focus on the gender implications of the French and German reforms. Because social citizenship in the two countries is refered to the male breadwinner model of family, the reforms introduce a major change in the conceptualization of women's social citizenship. The "activation turn" tend to reinforce the tension between work and care, especailly in a context where equal opportunity policy between women and men are not very efficient.
