Two Visions of Irish Republicanism Drawn Up in Captivity: John Mitchel’s Jail Journal and Michael Davitt’s Leaves From a Prison Diary

Résumé

This article seeks to demonstrate that the two books written in prison in the 19th century, John Mitchel's Jail Journal and Michael Davitt's Leaves From a Prison Diary, constitute two major works of Irish political literature, in that they laid the theoretical foundations for the two main tendencies of the Irish republican movement to this day: orthodox republicanism and republican socialism.
