While there was scarcely any mention of psychoanalysis in films in the first half of the twentieth century, the second half proved to be much more prolific in this respect. Nonetheless, few films managed to give a realistic on-screen portrayal of a psychoanalysis session. The twenty-first century has proven to be more creative. We have chosen to discuss Freud, the Secret Passion by John Huston (1962), along with Princesse Marie by Benoît Jacquot (2003) and A Dangerous Method by David Cronenberg (2011), all of which depict Freud’s work with two famous patients who went on to become psychoanalysts: Marie Bonaparte and Sabina Spielrein.
Si la psychanalyse ne fut guère représentée au cinéma au cours de la première moitié du xx e siècle, la seconde se révéla plus prolifique. Mais peu de films parvinrent à restituer à l’écran la réalité d’une séance analytique. Le xxi e siècle se montre davantage inventif. Aussi avons-nous choisi Freud, passions secrètes de John Huston (1962), Princesse Marie de Benoît Jacquot (2003) et A dangerous method de David Cronenberg (2011), qui mettent en scène la pratique de Freud avec deux célèbres patientes devenues psychanalystes, Marie Bonaparte et Sabina Spielrein.
