This paper, given orally at the transversal seminar of the doctoral schools in Rennes on 21 May 2015, sets out to address the question of the relationship between the scientific disciplines of the social sciences and the human knowledge embodied in the human 'scientific objects' under study, using three approaches that are milestones in the development of a doctorate. First of all, the confrontation of questions: is it possible to receive all the questions from civil society? How can research questions be made audible? How can we build the credibility of the social sciences and humanities in the social field? Secondly, taking account of the knowledge and experiences of the people and groups studied as material for SHS research: doubling up as an investigator who 'plays' with his or her respondents; making an effort to make our lexicon explicit; constructing the context of investigation to avoid crushing vernacular competence in favour of scientific competence... Finally, the 'return to the field' with a view to the social appropriation of science: how do we make this return? How can we build trust with our partners when they see the scientific word as a risk? How can we give legitimacy to popularisation in the scientific field?
